Question

I had XP, decided to get rid of it and install Ubuntu, but now I can only run it from the cd that I made. When I try to boot up it goes to the dard screen with the flashing cursor for about 5 min. then says that it cannot find the hard disk. When I choose normal boot mode it does the same thing.

Answer

Hi,

It sounds like either the hard drive partition is corrupted or the hard drive is dead. Have you tried doing a reinstall?

Thanks,
Rob

I will try to reinstall Ubuntu again and let you know, but I have to go to work now and will not get to do it until I get home tomorrow morning. Yes I work nights. :)

Hi,
I am back and will try the reinstall. I will be shutting this computer down as it is the one I am doing the reinstall on and will communicate to you with my laptop.

I have reinstalled Ubuntu 9.10. After completing the install it rebooted to start the new install but the screen came up with " Primary hard disk drive 1 not found. Below that it said strike F1 to continue. I did and it finished booting to Ubuntu. I don't know if it will reboot correctly the next time, but thanks for your help.

Accepted Answer

Ok a couple questions:

Do you have more than one hard drive?

Are you installing Ubuntu to the primary hard drive?

Are you sure it's actually installing? It sounds like a defective hard drive...

Only X XXXX XXXXX. Not sure where it is installing to. It's running now without the install disk. Should I try to shut it down and restart it?
