Question

I have a Mazda Protoge 5 2003 with aprox. 75k miles. I get 24 mpg (combo mostly street and occassional freeway). The car is idling roughly (w/o AC on) and I've measure approx. 1 mpg less average milage. Any clues? I would appreciate any input. Tanks a lot, Ed

Answer

There are a couple of possiablities. If it is only running rough at idel and the car is warm there may be a vacuum leak which causes a lean condition. Meaning you are getting more air then fuel. It wouldn't be noticeable when it is cold because, the vehicle runs a little bit richer when the car is cold for driveablity reasons. There other possibale cause may be the throtle plate might be dirty causing a lower then normal idle speed. Hope this is helpful.

If it is a vacuum leak what can I do. Is it simple for me to remedy.

Also if the throttle plate is dirty do I just clean it and lubricate it?

Tanks, Ed

Accepted Answer

Don't use any cleaners on the throtle plate, use a clean rag and wipe it out. A vacuum leak is usally a simple fix if it is a vacuum line or air intake boot that is cracked. Finding the leak can be a bit more difficult. A lot of times you can just hear the leak and other times you might need to have a smoke test done to find it, that is wear they inject smoke into the intake system and look the see where it comes out.
