Question

I have a 2004 optima 2.4 that I suspect just broke a timing belt. The car was running fine and idling at a stop sign when I heard a scraping noise followed by a couple of misfires all withing perhaps 2 or 3 seconds and then it died. It cranks freely with the starter but doesn't even try to fire. What is the possibility that it's only the belt????????????? Thanks

Hi,

Although it does sound like the timing belt broke, you need to pull the top timing belt cover to verify.

One concern of note. This is an interference engine, which means that there is a possibility that the valves were damaged when the belt broke, but if it broke while idling, you have a good chance of no damage. But dont keep cranking engine over until you verify that timing belt is broke or not.
