Question

Last night after my husband and I had intercourse I had sudden lower abdomen pain (pelvic pain...not sure, on the right and center). During intercourse I felt like a pop or something to that effect. We have been trying to get pregnant, but i've taken pregnancy test (last one a week ago, negative). I haven't had my period in 22 days. I have an appt. with the gyno next week. I'm just wondering if I should do something before then and if you have any suggestions of what may be causing the pain. This is the first time it's happened. I had a bowel movement before intercourse. Anything other info you may need, i'll be happy to provide. Thank you!

What was the actual date of your last period?

Have you had any vaginal discharge?

Any fever or urinary symptoms?

Actual date of last period was August 28, 2009. Normal vaginal discharge (i've always had some). I haven't had a fever. I did have to urine right after intercourse, and then twice this morning before 10 (didn't have anything to drink before then). No blood in urine that I can see.

Any pain when passing urine?

What is the color of the discharge?

No pain passing urine. The discharge color is white.

Accepted Answer

White discharge can be candida, so pain on intercourse can also indicate an infection and it is worth having some swabs run so that infection can be ruled out.

As pregnancy tests have been negative then you may wish to ask your doctor to run a blood test and I would also suggest a thyroid function test too. The other thing that may be useful would be an abdominal examination and ultrasound scan to check for ovarian cysts.

However there is a small risk of ectopic pregnancy so if you are tender to touch on the abdomen or have a fever then go to ER.

Why do you think I haven't had my period? My husband and I didn't start trying to have a baby until Oct. Do you think this could have some effect on getting pregnant?

How frequently were you having periods before?

Have you been on birth control? What was it...and when did you stop?

Well, earlier this year in March I went to the doctor because I was having lower back pain, they said it was a urinary tract infection. They gave me cypro(?). I went back because after a day of taking it I started bleeding and I had already had my period that month. He did a pap and when the results came back he said there was an infection (bacteria) and prescribed me flygl(?). He didn't give me a name of the infection (bacteria). The bleeding didn't stop for a couple of days, I just took it as my period again because it was like a period flow. I didn't go back because he didn't seem worried about it. Ever since then my periods have been irregular. I have never taken birth control.

Answer

Following a vaginal infection then it is possible to develop infection further up in the tubes, this can cause pain on intercourse however it can also increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy.

There are a number of other reasons for erratic or missed periods.

These include hormone imbalance, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, thyroid problems, stress, being underweight, or being excessively overweight, losing weight very quickly or exercising excessively.

In order to get an answer re hormone and thyroid you will need to request blood tests for these from your family doctor. The lifestyle factors can be looked at and changes made at home/work to reduce stress etc.

Your doctor will also want to hear about any other symptoms such as unwanted hair, mood swings, thinning hair, tiredness etc.

I am concerned about the risk of ectopic pregnancy and if you start to feel unwell then you must go to ER.
