Question

9 week old puppy that strains to poop. Fecal sample clean, good quality Iams puppy food (chicken first ingredient). Anus looks swollen but vet didn't determine there was anything really wrong. I just worry because it takes her so long to poop. It is not dry or watery, normal. What could it be?

What kind of food is she eating?

Did this start after she was chewing on anything including a toy or chew treat?

Does she seem to have abdominal pain?

IAMs puppy food

She has always been this way

She just takes a long time, doesn't appear painful. Sometimes I just help her and wipe her off.

Answer

If the stool seems very firm it may be she isn't getting enough fluids. You might try adding some canned food to her diet to see if that helps. Or some plain canned pumpkin, just a spoonful or two, if she already gets canned food, to give her a little extra fiber to keep stool moist and make it easier to pass.

Puppies can have problems where their intestinal tract narrows or has slipped 'telescoping' and partly blocking the intestinal tract making it hard to pass stool. Usually that is painful for the pup but not always.

In general pups should pass stool at least as often as the number of meals they eat a day.

If the above doesn't help her then you may want to consider some vet checking of her intestinal tract or slowly changing foods so that she is on a food with different ingredients than what she is eating now.

Hope this helps you!

Her stools are not hard and she had this problem when she was till nursing and eating at the same time. The vet said that she is too young to xray to see if there is anything wrong with her colon. If I try new food, how long before I might see a change? If her colon is telescoping, what does that mean? Is it fixable? Is it terminal?

Accepted Answer

Usually with a telescoping of the intestinal tract that is painful and infection can result. There can also be a twist to the intestinal tract.

You can read about the telescoping here

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2090&aid=307

Another condition called megacolon can make her retain stool and you can read about this here

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/constipation_and_megacolon.html

If you change foods you might find this resolves the problem in as soon as 24 hours or not for a few days depending on if there is stool backed up in her system.
