Question

I have a two year old black and white rat. He has what looks like a growth on his backside. His anus is large and leaking loose bowels. When i squeeze the area lots of loose bowel comes out and the growth shrinks. There seems to be no pain. He is eating and drinking and still active although a little sluggish.

Info Request

Hello,

Is the growth actually protruding from your rat's anus?

What color is the growth?

Did it appear suddenly or gradually over time?

Thank you.

yes it's on the outside of his body and it appeared suddenly. The growth is purplish red. just noticed he has what looks like normal poop coming out of his anus however the growth is between his penis and his anus the growth has it's own hole that is leaking loose bowel

Accepted Answer

Hello,

Without seeing it, I can't tell for certain what this is, but it sounds most like a prolapse. A prolapse is when an organ protrudes from a body opening. Sometimes it can be surgically replaced, and other times a vet can give supportive treatment. Prolapse can be caused straining to pass droppings, especially if diarrhea is frequent.

Regardless of what this is, your rat will need to see a vet if you hope for recovery. Rats don't have anal gland problems like dogs, so there is nothing you can do on your own. These links will take you to directories of vets who treat rats:

http://www.ratfanclub.org/vetref.html

In the meantime, put something other than litter in your rat's cage - a soft cloth, a towel, an old t-shirt. You want something that has no pieces that can stick to the protrusion.

I hope you're able to quickly find a vet who can treat your rat. If you have further questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY.

Thank You so much. I did find a vet have an appointment tues really difficult to find a vet that sees small animals. It's my daughters rat and she is really worried about him. Thank You again Jessica

Answer

You're welcome. Since you can't get to a vet today, make a paste of table sugar and water, and coat the protrusion with it. That will help protect it. I would also give the rat some Pedialyte because of the diarrhea. They can quickly become dehydrated. Just use a syringe to put it in the side of his mouth once per hour.

There's no need to click on accept again. Thank you for accepting above.

Thank you just put the paste on. We have several animals four dogs, two cats, two rats and a guine pig. We love them but when one gets sick it's so difficult. You have helped ease my worry a little at least i can try to keep him comfortable. This sight is great and i will recommend it to all my friends with pets.
