Question

My cat has diaoreah. It comes out almost totally fluid and is very smelly. We took him to the vet last week. He said to double the thyroid tabs he's already on.he's 13 years old..but suggested nothing else. The cat had lost 1 kg in weight. I've to take him back in 2 weeks. The cat doesn't seem to be in any pain. It's drinking and eating....often...but not much. I have some Pro-Kolin+, should I give him that? What else can I do?

Info Request

Hi there,

What does he eat?

How long has he had diarrhea?

Did the vet check his stool for parasites?

Indoor kitty?

Thanks,

Terri

He eats mainly tinned cat food.....also dried food is put down. Food always available on demand as I am at home all day. He has always eaten little but often. His appetite doesn't seem to be affected. He has had the diarrrhea about a week now. Vet didn't check stools. Didn't say much apart from to increase his thyroid tabs from one to two a day. Outdoor cat..we have cat flap...but is staying in at moment. Is usuing a litter tray though normally always 'does' outside.

Dear friend,

Cats that go out are very subject to piccking up a parasite or eating something they should not.

Hyperthyroid or his meds can cause diarrhea:

Here is a link for more information for hyperthyroidism in cats.

The medication can be compounded into a TRANSDERMAL form to be rubbed on the ears twice a day

Add one tablespoon of infant rice cereal to his canned or a jar of chicken baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

Give him a tsp a day of plain yogurt or a probiotic.

Please let me know how he is doing. I will always be here for you.

I hope he feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
