Hi XXXXXXXXX~
It does sound like your dog has some anxiety that she's not able to deal with. Of course, no one knows why a dog becomes anxious, but in my work with rehabilitating dogs, I've used a couple products that have really shown good results:
Melantonin is an over-the-counter drug that can be used to treat some anxiety issues in dogs. The dose you would give would be up to 3 mg given orally whenever necessary up to every 8 hours. More information can be found here: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/melatonin-melatonex/page1.aspx , which includes risks, warning signs to watch out for and other bits of useful information.
Try a DAP collar. These are collars that are impregnated with a man-made version of the dog appeasing pheromone, which is a pheromone that nursing bitches give off to their pups to help them feel calm and secure. It's something that humans can't smell, but it has an amazing effect on dogs with anxiety and other issues. Although you can find them at your vet's office..you can also find them online at places like Amazon.com and Ebay for much cheaper. Just make sure they're DAP brand, as they seem to work better than some other versions.
With some of the harder cases I've had, I use the DAP collar first, and if I don't see any measurable difference within a week or two, I go ahead and add in the Melatonin as well. Just be aware that the DAP collar has to be replaced every 30 days or it stops being as effective as it could be.
I hope this helps.
Well I absolutely agree with the anxiety issue, but since i have stopped the crate/coller she has gotten better...sleeps well during day, has no problem falling asleep at night. She is walked every day, played with occaisonally, we try.
I'm not sure your approach is going to stop her from waking at the hour she does. She wakes me to go out to pee and then runs back in to eat. she's a beagle....she is in love with food!!!
I believe you are correct, she does have some anxiety, but do you believe fixing the anxiety will stop her from this routine?
I see where you are going with the anxiety issue, but not with the waking up so early in the morning to eat and go out issue. Is it all related??
