Question

My 13 year old toy poodle has been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia. My vet has told me it is not life threatening, and suggests we wait to see what happens before we decide to operate. Is it better to operate straight away, or wait as my vet says ?

Hello,

This is Dr. Christian. Welcome to JustAnswer. A few questions will help me get a clearer picture of the situation:

  • Is it painful or getting larger?
  • How long has it been there?
  • Has she had any vomiting?

Hello Dr Christian

No. . . it is not painful. It does not appear to be getting larger.

It's present at times and then extracts back into it's normal position.

It has been present for approx 3 weeks.

A little perky yesterday. . . . but not severe vomitting.

Appeared bright this morning.

Kind regards

Victoria

I think I agree with your vet on this one. An inguinal hernia on a dog this age has some risks (mainly having to do with anesthesia). There also can be significant pain with recovery. Since the problem is not currently causing any discomfort I think it is fine to monitor the situation and do surgery if it worsens or causes her problems. If you have more questions please let me know.
