Question

Hi, My friend has a 3 year old pug. He has been suffering from seizures - for about a year now.. not often, maybe once a month or so. And not that bad either. However about a month and a half ago she changed his dog food to the science diet.. and then about a week later she woke up and his eyes were filled with mucous. She took him to the vet and they did some blood tests. His RBC is low and his tongue is light pink. He seems sometimes disoriented and tired. He has lost his appetite and seems to be very picky with what he is eating. The Vet said at first it was tick disease. Which did not show in his blood tests. Then they said he had a disease where his red blood cells were fighting and that his immune system was low. They put him on steriods and iron pills I am not sure exactly if this is the best for him. I am not convinced this is the right diganosis Please someone have an answer!

Dear Tennilleclarke,

Thank you for your post. I am sorry to hear about your friend's dog. I understand how difficult it can be when a pet is sick.

If possible, I would recommend that your friend's dog be evaluated by an internal medicine specialist, as they work through difficult cases like your friend's dog.

Unfortunately, I don't have enough information to speak directly about the little pug, but I can give you some general information. Certainly the immune system can result in an anemia, however, if the dog is on phenobarbital for it's seizures, then the medication can be the culprit.

I think the best thing would be to get a second opinion from and internist. i am sorry that I can't give you a specific or easy answer, but I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know how I can be of further assistance.
