Question

I have a 2005 545i. Recently during the first 15-20 minutes of driving the engine surges with an increase of about 500 RPM. The speed of the car does not change. The shifting of the transmission has become abrupt. Several times with moderate acceleration the engine revs-up very high and shifts very abruptly.

Info Request

Hi, how many miles on the vehicle?
Can you take a peak underneath and see if there is any fluid leaks in the area of the transmission? It has a splash shield that will catch most of it, but it will show some signs of a leak on the plastic shield under the trans.

I have about 78,000 miles. There is dripping from the transmission area.

Accepted Answer

Ok, low fluid level would be a cause for the concerns you described above.
The transmission electrical connector sealing sleeve, and plastic transmission pans leak oil commonly on these transmissions.
I would recommend replacing the sleeve, and the whole pan. Since these pans are plastic, they tend to not seal properly even with a new gasket. The pan is about $340, the sleeve about $20, with 4 hours labor, it is a costly repair, but essential if the fluid is leaking.

Once these parts are replaced and the trans is filled with the bmw fluid, it will need to have the adaptations in the transmission computer Reset back to 0. This can only be done with a BMW specifc scan tool.

There is also a bulletin for your vehicle for harsh 2-1 downshifts, this occurs while slowing down almost to a stop then accelerating again, and the trans banging the shift from 2-1. If you are experiencing this, the dealer will be able to program the transmission with a special software retrofit to alleviate this concern.
