Question

I want to adopt a puppy but I don't know what breed is good for me. I have other pets and children. I would like a dog that is 25 pounds or less. I would like an outgoing dog that I can bring places. what are some good breeds? I do not like terriers or hounds, thanks

Answer

Thank you for that information. There are two breeds that come to mind which are easily trained friendly personality, and good with kids and other animals and they would be the Bichon Frise ( a low shedder also) and a Shih Tzu. Both are pretty hardy dogs as well compared to other smaller dogs. Some of the hybrids with this mixture in them are just as good but you are going to pay a lot for something that is really at this time considered a mutt. I would stay away from anything that has Cocker spaniel in it such as the cockapoo which is very popular, but Cockers have been over bred and the personality can't be relied upon.

what about puts, caliver king charles spaniel and shelties? Are they okay breeds?

Posted by Sally Grott 19 days and 7 hours ago.

Answer

Well, shelties have a herding tendency so being around other animals or children could send it into herding mode, and when herding mode is not taught then it can cross the line into prey mode. Pugs are cute, but seem to have many problems especially because of their pushed in faces, also red mange. The Caviler king Charles have a tendency to get epilepsy or fly catchers syndrome a form of epilepsy.

I was thinking ahead to a dog with a good personality because I assume your children will have friends coming and going.

oh, pugs, shelties and caliver king charles spaniels are not good with people coming and going?

Posted by Sally Grott 19 days and 6 hours ago.

Answer

No that's not what I said, I was looking for dogs with personalities that are easy going and who are a bit more structurally sound, but hey, if that's what you're looking at then go for it. Picking out a dog is a very personal decision. But I always suggest when looking at a pup that you give a temperament test to get the best mentally sound dog you can. You get one that is not and you may end up a fear biter on your hands.

and what about breeders out of state?

Posted by Sally Grott 19 days and 6 hours ago.

Answer

Personally I would never buy out of state unless you are looking at someone who shows dogs and has a great reputation. There are too many puppy mills that sell out of state because they know more than likely that the person is not going to check the premises. I would never buy a pup without being able to see the parents so you can see what their temperament is like and I would never buy from a pet store as their dogs come from puppy mills. Your best bet is word of mouth or check the premises yourself.

how do I find breeders near me

Accepted Answer

I would first check your vet offices as they are going to know pregnant dogs and they are going to know pretty much how the owners keep up with the dogs they own. I woud then check dog shows as they sometimes bring the litter with them as the mother or father show. Generally many breeders that are somewhat new to this will advertise in the paper and are likely to not be quite as expensive and at least one of the parents will be on premises. You can google a breeder in your area once you have decided on what breed you think you would like, as long as they are in your area you can check them out If any person that is in your area makes an excuse as to why you cannot see how and where the pups are raised then don't buy from them, they are more than likely hiding something. A breder who cares about their pups will put you through quite an interview to see if you qualify to have one of their pups and most likely will have you sign a contract on that pup.
