Question

My vet took a urine sample from my dog. He said it was loaded with crystals. He put her on urinary SO 14. She has been eating wellness core because she gets the itches if she eats a food with grains. He said if she stayed on the core, that she would surely develope stones. She hardly eats this SO 14 stuff, plus the main ingredient in this is rice, that can't be good for her. It also contains chicken fat which also can't be too good. Can you reccomend a food that would do the same function as the SO 14 but has better ingredients?

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXX~

I actually just had the same problem with my Maltipoo. Due to his severe allergies, I have to be very careful about what he eats, so when he developed Struvite crystals, I was hesitant to try the SO...

Luckily, I have a really good vet who opted to try the Science Diet s/d instead. It's a canned formula, so it has less (although it still has some) of the grains in it...but my little guy didn't do nearly as much itching as he did when I was feeding him the SO.

He's now stone free and is maintained on the Science Diet c/d diet...still has grain in it, but seems to bother him much less. Perhaps you could talk to your vet about trying the s/d and see if that helps.

Good luck!

Does the canned food make her stools looser or softer. My aussie had good solid stools while she was eating the Wellness Core, now her stools are soft since shes been eating the SO 14. She also is very hesitant about eating it. I almost have to hand feed her to get her to eat the SO 14. She doesn't seem to like it. I know what hes going to say "would you rather have her get stones or have to hand feed her or have loose stools"? I just dont think its a quality ingredient dog food, with rice, corn, and chicken fat. Do you any dry food that will be good for her and supposedly not cause her to get stones?

Accepted Answer

Hi again.

I didn't have any trouble with loose stools during my feeding of the s/d...however, every dog is different. The most important thing though is getting the stones taken care of...loose stools can be controlled with some Flagyl (available from your vet) until the stones are gone.

Unfortunately some dogs are simply stone formers...and it sounds like your girl might be in that category.
