I haven't really tried anything. I figured it was because it was not compatible with the new Vista operating system

Part of my problem is that my computer is at home, I am in the office- I do not have Internet at home.

In WordPerfect 7 I cannot scroll with the mouse, I have to use the arrow keys.

I cannot do a draft copy - it shows 600 x 600 High or 300 x 300 Low & I can't see any difference between the two when they are printed out..

The only toolbars available are: WordPerfect 7 Toolbar; Power Bar; Ruler Bar; Status Bar. With my Windows XP I had many more options. I especially liked being able to see at the bottom of the screen the documents that are open at the present time, now I have to go up to the Window menu to choose which document, or Control F6 to switch documents until I get the document that I want, which is a pain.

I cannot use "Help" in WordPerfect. The message that I get is "The help for this program was created in Windows Help format, which was used in previous versions of Windows and is not supported by Vista. For more information see Windows Help Program (WinHlp32exe) is no longer included with windows on the Miscrosoft support website. I apparently have to go to the Internet for it, and I don't have the Internet.

Most of the time when I go to print a document, I get "Unknown device. No Drivers are installed for this device. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. Try reconnecting the device and if Windows still does not recognize it, replace the device." Almost everytime I go to print after booting up the computer, I have to unplug the USB cord and then plug it back in for the first print job. After that, it will do "ok" until the next time I start up the computer.

I tried to install my Microsoft software. It asked me to register. "In the boxes below, type your 25 character CD Key. You'll find this number on the yellow sticker on the back of the CD Jewel Case. I don't have any such number, nor do I have a jewel case. When I purchased my computer from Gateway, It had Microsoft Works Suite 2000 already installed on it. What Gateway provided for me was the discs, in a handy loose leave type (small) notebook and there is no License number on it. Because I don't have the number, it bounces me right out of Word. It did let me install the HomePublishing part of it - why, I don't know. I still am unable to install Word.

Believe me, if I am able to get a solutions to these problems, I am willing to pay more than the $14.00 that I agreed upon.

Thank you, XXXXXXXX XXXX

Answer

Thank you for such detailed information. It has helped a lot in determining your best course of action at this point.

Let's address a few things:

-WordPerfect Suite 7 was created back in 2000. Windows XP was made to work with most programs that worked with at least Windows 98. This explains the issues that you have with Vista trying to work with WordPerfect 7.

You have options though:
1. Purchase and install an updated version of WordPerfect. I believe the latest version is X3 or X4.
2. Download and install OpenOffice.org, a FREE office suite that can open, edit, and save many different types of documents, including WordPerfect and Microsoft Word.

-As for the Microsoft Works Suite 2000, there is nothing you can do about that software unless you have the Product Key (normally, it's on the outside of the CD case). However, if you are trying to use Word from that Suite, you can download OpenOffice (as mentioned before) and still be able to use and edit your documents.

There is no way to get around the "Windows Help" issue.

OpenOffice can be downloaded to a USB flash drive as it's under 200MB in size. You can also burn it to a CD. Since it's FREE, you don't need a product key.

-In regards XX XXXX printer, what brand and model of printer do you have?

My Printer is a 842c Hewlett Packard Deskjet

I guess I misunderstood the Website that I am at. I thought I was accessing WordPerfect. I know in the past with issues such as this, they could lead me through a solution, so I thought that was what would happen this time.

Accepted Answer

Unfortunately, this is not Corel, who created WordPerfect. There is a software incompatibility that cannot be overcome with the older WordPerfect software.

You can still access WordPerfect documents by using OpenOffice. Check out the website at http://www.openoffice.org.

As for your printer, there are no full-feature drivers for Vista, only a basic printing driver. Basically what that means is that while your printer is compatible, no drivers are being made to give you the full features that you had in XP, hence this may be the reason why you have some compatibility issues.
