Question

My 9 year old 9-# poodle had a vaccination yesterday (DA2P-parvo). Last night she was shivering and this morning is limping. There appears to be tenderness at the injection site (right shoulder). Is this an expected reaction or could there be neurological involvement?

Give your dog an 81 mg aspirin tablet, place a pack of frozen peas/corn as cold therapy on the shoulder and if she is very restless give her 1/2 ml of a liquid benedryl or about 12.5 mg of benedryl.

Not an expected reaction but common in small dogs with thin skin like your small poodle. Also may depend on the exact site of the injection, if a muscle was hit with the needle and individual animal reactions to the vaccine.

FYI, the vaccine dose is the same for a 150 lb dog or a 9 lb poodle and so the smaller dogs tend to have more issues with injection site pain and swelling.

hope this helps. she'll be ok and NO it is not neurologic onless a nerve was hit with the needle. take these steps I recommended above and if no better tomorrow have her rechecked by your vet.
