Question

Last night at a halloween party, one or both of our dogs (a retriever and a westie) ate some of our bacon wrapped chestnuts, during the cleaning up process. We did find some toothpicks on the ground, but are afraid of how many toothpicks they may have eaten while eating the bacon, etc. Will the wood breakdown in their stomachs before they may pass it, and do you think anything could have been punctured while the sharp wood went down? I am very concerned. So far they appear to be "normal". The Westie vomitted at 4:00 a.m., and it looked a little like bar-b-que sauce and chestnuts, but no wood. She still appears to be feeling fine, and did eat her breakfast this morning also. What should I be watching for? Thank you .... sandi harrison

Pet's Sex: Female
Pet's Age: 11

Nothing other than drinking water, and then breakfast this morning. The Westie is also diabetic, so I know the sauce would not have been good for her. The golden retriever is 3 yrs. old, and male, and appears to be acting normal also.

Hello and thank you for your question.

It is not likely that the wood will break down in the stomach however the stomach acids may soften them enough to allow them to pass.

I would watch them carefully for any signs of intestinal bleeding such as vomiting blood, or blood in the stool. You can add oatmeal, bread or metamucil to their diet for the next day or so to help bulk up the diet and provide more fiber which may also help them pass through the system.

The bacon can also cause stomach upset or diarrhea.

If they stop eating been vomiting blood or have blood in the stool or fail to pass stool you will want to have them seen right away.

I hope this has helped to ease your mind at least for now. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you, also please feel free to reply back with any additional questions you may have.
