Question

I am 30 years old and I have had left arm pain over the last few months, and rarely chest pain, once every blue moon. I went to the cardiologist wore an event monitor for 3 weeks, ekg, stress test, and echo, and he said everything looked good. The only question that I have is why does my heart beat go anywhere from 47 to 150. I can be sitting down, and doing nothing special and it will reach either end of the spectrum. What are your thoughts? I am being treated for anxiety and depression, and I am on clonazopam, lexapro, and buspar.

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry you are having these problems. Anxiety is well known to cause a rapid jump in pulse rate and continue to rise as the anxious thoughts increase. Arm pains, jitteriness, problems swallowing...etc... are all part of the big anxiety circle.
If your cardiac tests are all normal, what remains is the fact that you have to find an effective way to control the anxiety. Anxiety is a learned behavior that can be unlearned. When your heart rate starts to go up let it go up.. say to yourself..oh well..there it goes again. big deal..it happened before it will happen again. and mean it. KNOW that NOTHING bad will happen, it never has and it never will. Once you teach yourself to accept that your heart rate variation are normal you will find that you pay less and less atention to them. I wish you the best:-)
