Question

Low fuel warning (bell & light) does not work on 2002 Olds Bravada, & the tank is apparently empty even tho the gauge shows just under 1/4. Tank, when filled from a near empty state accepts only 14 gals of gas into a 18+ gal tank. The gauge then reads full! Sender and fuel cap have been replaced without positive result.

Answer

Then the gauge must not be true. or there could be a pinch in the wiring to and from. since the the sending unit measures resistance a pinch that has not been broken may pick up connection in the wiring.

Also:

Does your reply explain why the tank apperently can't be filled to its stated capacity of 18.7 gals?

Answer

Kinda like a wire being smashed but the plastic cover is just thin so current can get through.

Are filling it up from running out of gas or the gas gauge empty

Car had begun to hesitate, lurch, etc. when accelerating from a stop sign, a condition that had previously resulted in the enging stalling, Fuel gauge was at 1/4 full. Used the automatic position on the gas station pump, which shut off at 14 gals. I assume that the tank was very close to empty, as I diagnosed the hesitation due to what fuel that was left shifting to the rear of the tank on forward movement of the car. But f it was empty, why only 14 gal input from Shell, when they certainly would like to sell me 4 more gals?

Accepted Answer

You may have a weak fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator. I Am betting you stil have a quarter tank left but when the tank is full it assist the pump with the volume of pressure. The reason Why I say this is because it just happened to me.
