Hello,
I commonly have patients who are nervous about seeing me and their pressure is elevated.
This is what I do. I have them monitor and record their blood pressure for 6 or more readings over 2 weeks at different times of the day. Then bring in the recording with them AND the machine they use to take their b/p on. This way I can check their machine with ours and make sure that they are relatively close. Then I can trust the readings that they bring in with them.
Second part I tell them that usually going to the doctor's is not the worst stress in their life. Therefore if their blood pressure is elevated coming to see me then it probably is increasing that high in other stressful situations and needs to be managed.
Thirdly, once you feel comfortable with your provider and know that they will also look at your readings for b/p, your stress level will go down at subsequent office visits. Take deep breaths before you go in, Imagine yourself in a favorite "safe" place - the beach, cabin in the woods, etc... Sit for 10 minutes before they take your blood pressure. We are here to help you, not yell at you for your blood pressure.
I think you are wise to be concerned about your health and are making progress.
I hope this helps!
I do have a patient that is that way with even talking about getting his blood drawn. He literally passed out in my office.
It is important that you get care for your health. What do you think is making you so stressed about seeing one? Is is the fear of finding something wrong? Have you tried to analyze it? Not stress about it but try to figure out what makes you so scared? Have you had a bad experience?
Have had anxiety issues for years about this. The last doctor I saw asked me rudely "what was the matter with me"? Because I was so nervous. Dont what to repeat that embarrassing moment. I know I should seek some kind of therapy. But what kind?
Well you could start with a counselor and be specific about your anxiety.
Another thing you could try is to call the provider and speak with the nurse or receptionist and explain the anxiety issue . Hopefully they will be able to make you an early morning appointment so you wont have to wait long.
I wish that you can find an understanding provider. Try a Nurse Practitioner, they are typically more patient and understanding
