Question
Hello! I rent a house that was built in 1951 & has a fireplace. I've lived there a year & I asked my landlord if he'd pay half the cost of hiring someone to sweep the chimney. Two questions: 1) My landlord seems to think that creosote only builds up when burning GREEN wood. Is that true? 2) How effective are CSL logs? He therefore said "no" to the chimney sweep. :( As my landlord, I thought he might want to be proactive to prevent a chimney fire (before I moved in there was another significant fire in the house 5 yrs ago). Thank you so much! Sincerely, Catherine in Portland, OR

Hi XXXXXXXXX
Burning all wood green or dry creates creosote. The contributing factor to build up is how much wood was burned. If several cord of wood have been burned then the chimney needs to be cleaned. If only the occasional fire has been lit then the chimney may not need a cleaning. Prudence would dictate at least an inspection if quantities are unknown. CSL logs may help but they are no substitute for a conventional cleaning.
