Question

My son is 13 and has been sick since last Thursday. I took him to the doctor on Thursday and he tested negative for flu, however, had flu symtoms including fever. They gave him an antibiotic for virul infection. He still had bad headaches on Saturday, so I took him back. The fever had gone down and the doctor suggested I alternate tylenol and ibuprofen every 3 hours to help him relax. The fever finally broke on Saturday and the headaches are not so severe. He finished the antibiotic on Tuesday but is still having the headaches today and coughing with a sore throat. During this time on Sunday I became sick. I didn't really run any fevers but had all the bodyaches and deep coughing and sinus congestion. I went to the doctor on Tuesday and was diagnosed with a sinus infection. I'm on a bacterial antibiotic. Based on this, I thought I would take him back and see if he needs to switch to a bacterial antibiotic since he seems to have the same symptoms as I do. What do you think?

Accepted Answer

Hello; Thank you for writing in today. At this point, your son should have had more significant improvement in his symptoms. Also, if he was on an antiviral medication before, as you mention, he may actually need antibiotic to treat bacterial infection. Your two illnesses are likely linked; therefore, since you responded to the antibiotics, he may also. I agree. I think taking your son in for a re-evaluation would be a good idea. You could call to see if you can get him in today. I hope this helps answer your question. If you have additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa
