Question

I am a 49 years old male. I over did my exercise a week ago and have very sore arms and can hardly touch my face with my hands because I couldn't bend my arm. The pain went away in about 3 days and my arms were fine. Until yesterday, I was fine and my arms were back to normal without any pain. Yesterday, I noticed that my right arm has swolen. This morning my left arm has also swolen. It appears to have liquid in them. It feel like a sack of water at the elbow. The swolen are at the portion of the arm just below and just above the elbow. I have full use of the arms and have no pain other than tightness when bending. The arms do not feel warm or discolored. I do not have shortness of breath and otherwise am fine. My blood pressure is not too high (149/88) with 75 heart rate. Is this a precursor of a serious things like blood clot, stroke, or something that will go away in a few days?

Hello,
Are you able to completely fold or extend your arm at the elbow?
Is there any swelling also on the back of elbow at the sides of midpoint of the elbow?
Please reply.

Reply

Yes, I can fold and extend my arm at the elbow with some tightness because of the swelling.

The swelling is on the entire arm just below the elbow and above the elbow. At the elbow, it feel like a sack of liquid there.

Accepted Answer

It is the post traumatic synovitis at the elbow. It is the aseptic inflammation of the membrane of the elbow joint which does secretes the excessive amount of the fluid in response to the trauma to the near by area that are the biceps & brachii muscles which over ride the elbow. You should not worry due to this as this is natures protective mechnism to prevent the joint from injury. You should do following to have relief-

1.Apply a soft creepe bandage from the wrist to mid arm.

2.Keep the limb in pouch arm sling which can be taken OTC.

3.Give rest of the limb for 5-7 days ,avoid any heavy work & excessive movement at the wrist & elbow.

4.Take an anti inflammatory analgesic like advil.

5.Continue ice fomentation.

Hope this will be helpful.
