Question

I have an older (1974)Newport 30 sailboat powered by a Universal Atomic 4 (gas) I'm thinking about changing to a diesel engine (15-20 hp). Should I consider a rebuilt? Can I find a diesel that will fit into the existing space? And of course what would this cost? Thanks Linda

Optional Information

Make (of engine): Universal
Model (of engine): Atomic 4
Year: 1974 ?
Horsepower: 20

The engine is pretty old, and I am going to be doing some cruising in florida and the islands and I feel diesel is better economy wise and diesel is less flamable than gas

I would consider a rebuilt diesel sure as long as it comes with some kind of warranty and the price is less then a new one. get a hold of boatswaines locker in costa mesa, california i believe they are still a yanmar dealer they can help you out with needs here is the phone number 1-949-642-6800.

Thanks for yourr fast response. I'm glad to hear that a rebuilt diesel with a waranty is an option. Can you give me a ball park idea of cost? Will a diesel fit into the old atomic 4 space? I'm on the east cost now Rochester New York on Lake Ontario

and taking the ICW to Florida in a year or so. I want the diesel in before the big trip. Thanks again,

Linda
