Question

We have a small 9 year old poodle that can’t control her bowels, she doesn’t have diarrhea she just doesn’t know when she has to go. Needles to say she makes a mess everywhere. What can we do? We don’t have a lot of money. Help.

Dear friend,

I am so sorry you are having such a problem with your girl.

This is a form of incontinence and it may be a bit of diarrhea.

It sounds like her spincter muscles are weak which could be related to her hips. Ask your vet to try a steroid to reduce inflammation.

Proin is used for bladder issues and may help with bowel as well:

Try Dasuquin:

It's an excellet glucosimine product. You can get the best price at http://www.petmeds.com/

Try low fiber foods:

Purina DCO - has a fiber content between maintenance foods and w/d - it is around 7% fiber (w/d is around 15%)

---Eukanuba Optimum weight control

If necessary, the sell doggie diapers for your baby in pet stores.

Please let me know how things go.

I will always be here for both of you.
