Question

I am 62 years old and have just had a digital exam and my Doctor determined that I have BPH. I am scheduled to have a Pelvic Sonogram. I am wondering why he would be scheduling this test and should I be worrying about Prostate Cancer. If he is doing this for Prostate Cancer then why did he not do a PSA test Please advise in your opinion what he is looking for

Answer

Hello

You should not do a PSA untill two weeks after a digital exam - just doing the exam releases PSA and doing the test now would give rise to a false positive result.

I'm not sure why he has requsted a pelvic scan - if his exam was consistent with a tumor then a biopsy would be the usual next step.

can you provide any type of reasons why he is having me take this test.

Hi

If I suspected BPH on a digital exam I'd wait and do a PSA - if that were OK I'd start some medication ( depending upon what symptoms you had).

Re why are you having a sonogram - can I ask what symptoms you have?

I did not have any symptoms that I had a chance to tell him about. I have recently experienced a need to urinate more.

He did a blood test, and he mentioned my Kidney and Liver was fine.

I had a 5.8 on potassium test and a 12 on white blood cell count.I usually have around a 10.5-11 on these tests

Like I said previously he just did the exam and said I have BPH and said he was going to schedule a Sonogram

Accepted Answer

Hi

Presumably he wants to confirm the diagnosis.

A rectal sonogram can be used for this.

A pelvic ultrasound is not so good at imaging the prostate.
