I have an 1989 17' vip boat. It has a 2.3l engine with an omc outdrive. I know there is a conversion to make it a mercrcruiser outdrive. What I need to know is which particular outdrive and conversion that i need to do this.

Answer

Thank you for the question XXXXXXXXX,

There is no "KIT" per say to convert this drive to a mercruiser system.....

That being said, we can convert to a Mercruiser system and use the same engine that came with the OMC Cobra...

The cutout on the transom is the same between the two systems so no modification will be necessary in that department....

The pieces that will however need to be changed to the Mercruiser parts will be the, Drive, transom bracket assembly, exhaust tube, flywheel housing, coupler, shift bracket assembly, Manifold and riser, and control box....

As you can tell there is a lot of dissimilar parts that simply will not directly convert over....

Some Are: The drives mount and shift different and won't adapt so the transom bracket will have to be replaced with the Mercruiser, when the transom plate is replaced the flywheel housing will not mate to that, so it will need to be replaced, the exhaust tube to he manifold will not fit the transom assembly so that too will need to be replaced, and the manifold and riser will need to be replaced with the Mercruiser parts because the OMC riser will not mate with the Mercruiser exhaust pipe, The Control box will need to be replaced and modified because, the shift cable is different then the OMC version and the throttle cable on the Mercruiser pulls to advance and the OMC pushes to advance (On most engines)....The keyswitch and wiring harness will be fine because we are keeping the OMC engine and OMC harness....

A really big project....The drive system that I am referring to is the Mercruiser Alpha, any version of this system MR, Alpha, or Alpha One Gen II, will convert this way....We will run into the same issues if a Volvo is attempted to be converted....
