Question

Hi, My 4 year old black lab has been itching constantly for several weeks now. He is most concerned with the area right above his tail (though he might be trying to get at his anus), but also licks his paws a lot and is generally very uncomfortable. We see no sign of fleas, and on a friends advice we changed his food from a low weight gain food to a normal high quality food. We are also bathing him twice a week with Malaseb which has helped a bit with the strong "dog smell" but has not seemed to stop the itching. Then I noticed yesterday a white ring around his anus - he has no other rings or skin issues elsewhere - in fact his coat looks very good. The ring is so pronounced I know it must be some indication of what is going on. Your insight would be very helpful. Thank you.

Answer

Hello,

It sounds like your boy has ring worm which is pretty common in dogs. Ringworm in dogs is not caused by worms. It is actually a skin disease caused by a plant or when one dog with the disease touches another dog. The fungus lives in hair follicles, causing the hair to break off. .

The disease looks like a circle on the dog's skin with raised edges. It looks like the hair has been removed in a circle or patch with a pale spot at the center. Common ringworm in dogs symptoms include crusty skin, scaling and sometimes redness. Odd shapes usually mean that multiple lesions joined together.

I also suspect that he may suffer from allergies, Based on what you are describing it sounds like he may have developed a food allergy which is causing the problem. The fact is itching is almost always associate with a handful of issues which are allergy's, Bacterial Infections, Hormonal,Cushings Disease and Mites as well as other conditions.

I suspect he is having a food allergy. With allergy's it is a matter or trial and error. The word allergy is enough to scare some people lol..........the fact is it can take weeks or months to pin point the problem and get him settled.

The first step is to put him on bottled water. The second step is to talk to his vet about trying the allergen free food from science diet. If that does not clear up the issues then we start with a list.

What has changed since this started?
Are you using new soaps with wash?
Are you using any new cleaning agents that you did not use before he got sick?
Was their a change in his environment such as a move to a differing climate?
Any new foods or snacks?
Any new dog shampoos, tooth paste, chew toys, or brushes?
Any changes in perfumes or deodorants you or family members may wear?
Possible new furniture or bedding items that dog may lay in?

Once you have narrowed down any changes (Even slight ones) try removing that from the picture. Wait a week to make sure that there is no change in his symptoms. Then move on to the next item. If he gets snacks, remove all of them for now to see if that causes a difference. If it does then slowly introduce one back at a time to see if there is a change. If he starts getting itchy again you will have narrowed down which snack or food. Do not feed him any table foods or human foods at all. If you have in the past something may have triggered the allergic reaction.

Now for the bad news, if you have checked everything new and the problem persists it may be a new allergy he has developed. Dogs can sometimes use the same thing for years and never have a issue, then get slammed with a allergy from it. Start going though some of his things. Remove old chew toys, bedding, or snacks for week or so to see if this clears it up.

If after everything has been checked if you are still unable to pin point it your vet may be able to run some tests to see if he can narrow it down.

The first step is to get him on a allergy free food first, as this is the single most common cause when allergy's are suspected. I would also advise you to have a blood panel done at your local vets office to rule out other underlying conditions. A skin scraping should be done as well. He will need to be seen by the vet for medication for his ring worm as well.

Thank you for your answer - however, I'm not sure if you saying that it is ringworm or allergies or both? If he does not have any other "rings" on his skin, but this white area around his anus only, is that a sign of ringworm on it's own? His coat looks good otherwise. I thought that the ring around the anus might be a sign of some sort of worm. Nothing has changed in his life - food, environment, bedding etc..

Hello,

I suspect he has both, the allergies can develop over time using the same food for items for years. Food allergies are the most common, and he likely has developed a allergy to the corn filler in the commercial dog foods. This is extremely common in dogs, a quick switch to a allergy free food should clear this up.

As for the ring worm, this is pretty common as well......since he is scratching so much more lately he has opened himself up to this fungus. Ringworm generally starts in one area....then over time it spreads if not treated. While it could be a different fungus or infection in the anal glands I do suspect the ring worm. Parasites and worms do not cause this symptom so it is not a worm regardless. Either way he will need to see the vet, for a anti fungal ointment antibiotics and maybe a medicated shampoo.
