Question

Hi, I had a genital wart removed by cryosurgery and it left a very prominent white scar on the inside of my foreskin. It looks like the pigmentation cells have been burned away becuase the skin is very white in comparison. What can I do to ake this scar less visible, or go darker. Is there a product or some type of treatment that would regenerate the color on this scar...

I have tried applying hydrogen peroxide, and put a type of silicone bandage that is supposed to reduce the scar, but this worked in that there is no disformation or scar tissue, just a loss of color in the skin.

How long back was the cryo done?

Answer

Hyper or hypopigmentation is not common after cryo therapy but the good thing is that it is short lived and should go away in about 9 months. It can be treated with with regular use of topical steroids, glycolic acid, retinoids, and hydroquinones. You can discuss it with your treating doctor which option will be better for you. Thanks.

Hi, the cryo was done about 2 weeks ago. I think that what was used was perhaps a little more potent that what should have ben used. The cryo was done using the Dr.Scholl's wart removal freezaway product.

Answer

Double freeze thaw technique would have been applied. It has just been two weeks so it is very likely to go. If it is bothering you a lot then you can get it examined by your doctor but I do not see a cause for concern. Thanks.

Well, I am not worried about it from a health standpoint. The scar has healed properly and there is no infection. My question is regarding how can I diminish the appearance of the scar from a cosmetic standpoint. The scar is in a very visible area and it causes me grave conscern. What can I do to reduce its appearance or make the scar dissapear entirely...

Accepted Answer

Well, that's what I am also saying that the hypopigmentation will go. It is usually not long term. At the most it may take a few months. The epithelium will be continually replaced from beneath and it will gradually darken with time. Thanks.
