Question

i have a female calico who is about 6 months old. she hasn't gone into heat yet & want to get her spayed. i may not get a chnace to do it until right before x-mas but am worried she will go into heat before then. i read that they tend to start their heat i the fall or spring so is there a chance i'll be safe until march since winter is almost here?

Hi, and thanks for your question.

Cats usually go into heat at about the age she is now, 6 months. They usually have litters in the Spring, this may be what you heard, but going into heat is based upon age, not the seasons. However, 6 months is the 'average' age for females to go into heat. Some may start earlier, at 4 months, and some later, closer to a year old. However, once she goes into heat, if you can't get her spayed right now, you'll have to get her spayed ASAP. Also, vets don't prefer to spay cats who are in heat because there's more of a risk, due to increased blood flow to the area, but it's so hard to tell when they're 'out' of heat, it would be difficult to determine when's the best time for her surgery.

This organization, if you're located in the USA, will help you find low cost and free spay clinics: www.lovethatcat.com/spayneuter.html

I hope you're able to have your furry girl spayed before she goes into her first heat, all will be well! Just make sure she is not ever in contact with any unneutered males, until she's fixed.
