Question

My two year old boxer is having bowel problems. He always has diareah, never solid, ever. My vet and I have done several fecal tests and is always negative for any parasites. I stricktly feed him Purina chow which is what he has been on since he was 8 weeks old and is what the breeder was feeding him, also rawhide treats. I have changed brands for a few weeks to see if any change would incure, but same result. The duration of his problem has been for almost 6 months or longer and ive been asking everyone if they have ever heard of this problem. I read on the net that chicken bones and pork bones are bad for dogs becuase they splinter, and I recalled my ex girlfriend giving him pork butt bones to chew on and he would just eat the whole thing, and probably 10 or 12 over a couple of weeks. So I have an appointment with my vet again this friday and so; I guess my question is what can this do to my dog, have you seen this before, whats the best test to do to see if it is the problem?

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX~

Has your dog had an x-ray of his abdomen?

Does he do any vomiting at all, or is it just diarrhea?

What other things has your vet suggested trying (ie: medications, ect)?

How does he act otherwise?

We havnt done an x-ray

No vomiting at all, just diarrhea

Doc wanted to send off a sample of his stool to a diarrhea panal where they would run it through like 163 diffent things to check it for everything but we havent done it.

We did give him some meds at the beginning called Metronidazole 500 mg 30 of them it seemed to help him not have to go so often but didnt resolve the diarrhea or blood in the stool.

He is always having to go as well if I were to count him all day long I would say 10 to 15 times daily he is squatting even if nothing comes out. sometimes its just watered down poop, or spots of blood like a human having a nose bleed. And the diarrhea is violent man, very explosive

He has never really seemed lathargic at any time, he does seem a little more tired sometimes, but he always is at the door to great me, and plays like normal, but latey he seems to have lost just a small amount of weight. I couldnt measure it unitll I go back to the vet but just seems a little sunken in. And I would be the same way if I had diarrhea for more than 6 months

Hi again.

I think starting with an x-ray might be a good place to start...especially since your ex-girlfriend was feeding him bones for a while. It wouldn't be completely out of the realm of possibility for him to have some kind of partial obstruction that is causing this loose stool issue.

You might also want to ask them about doing a barium study...this is where they have your dog drink a product that sort of 'lights up' their digestive tract as it goes down...then they can see if there are any strictures or growths or anything that could be causing this kind of problem.

If your vet can't figure out what is going on (and often, digestive problems are very hard to figure out), then asking for a referral to an internist might not be a bad idea. Often, these types of specialists have much more experience in these kinds of problems and will have better ideas how to get them fixed.
