Hello,

I'm sorry to hear your ferret is not feeling well. There are many possibilities which may be causing her current symptoms. She could have ingested something toxic, she could have pneumonia, or another respiratory condition, causing her labored breathing.

There is a type of beta cell tumor called an 'isulinoma', which causes an over production of insulin and therefore, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This is another possibility.

Try dipping a q-tip in some slightly watered down Karo corn syrup, honey, or maple syrup and rub onto your ferret's gums. See if this helps her perk up. If any of the Karo syrup gets on her fur surrounding her mouth/lips, make sure to clean it off very well, as it can cause intense itching. Also, notice if the color of her gums is pink or paler, like white or bluish. If her gums are pale, this means she is not getting enough oxygen and/or she may be bleeding internally.

There's no doubt that your ferret needs to be evaluated and treated by a vet, in person, immediately. If it's now after hours for you, and your regular vet doesn't have emergency hours, bring her to the nearest ER vet center, but call first, to make sure they have a vet there who is experienced in treating ferrets.

I hope you're able to have her seen as soon as possible, and all will be well.

Thank you for your answer, I agree she needs to see a vet but can't locate one tonight to take her to. Guess I will see if she makes it through the night and take her in morning. Is there anything else we could do? She didn't respond to Caro other than slightly swallowing it.

Hello again, and you're most welcome.

If she didn't perk up after the Karo syrup, she may not be hypoglycemic. I'm sorry there's nothing else I can recommend except to keep her comfortable and monitor her until she can see a vet in the morning.
