Info Request

Hello. Thanks for writing in. Any blood in his diarrhea? Any vomiting? How is his appetite? How many sets of puppy vaccines has he had? When was his last set?

Reply

No blood, up to date on all vaccines. On 10/22 he had Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Parainfluensa-Parvovirus vaccine, was just fine. said he needed to gain some weight, so I am feeding him 3x daily high quality dog food, 23% protein, nothing out of the norm, untill about 5 o'clock and he just got so lathargic, and I gave him his second wormer, and the diaherra hasnt stopped since.

What was the dewormer? Were the vaccines on 10/22 his first, second or third round of vaccines?

2nd set on 10/22, and the wormer is Panacur 10% solution. It came pre measured from the vets office. Every time I give him the wormer he is sick.

Answer

Thanks for the information. It may be that he just can't handle the dewormer. What did they prescribe it for? Did he have any parasites, or is it just for routine deworming. What is his weight and how much Panacur is he getting? Even with 2 sets of vaccines, it is still possible to catch parvo. The chances are low, and the signs are usually mild, but I have seen it happen. They are not fully protected until at least 3 sets of vaccines. Other causes can include certain intestinal parasites not responsive to Panacur, Giardia, something he ate (new food, new treats, human food, trash, plants), other intesinal viruses or bacterial infections or a gastrointestinal foreign body obstruction. You didn't mention if he was vomiting or not. If so, that would be more a cause for concern. If not vomiting, his gums are pink, he has no abdominal pain (press both hands around abdomen), he is walking around fine and the diarrhea has stopped, you can probably watch him tonight and get him into your vet tomorrow. If you notice any vomiting, more diarrhea, blood in the diarrhea, abdominal pain, pale gums or severe weakness/lethargy, I would consider getting him checked out tonight by your nearest emergency vet. You can try giving him some water orally with a syringe or something similar if he is not drinking much. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Hope this helps.

just rutine deworming, not vomiting, pink gums, but he grunts when i press on his belly.

Accepted Answer

The grunting may be uncomfortableness or pain. The best thing to do would be to have him seen by a vet tonight to be on the safe side. If he is willing and able to walk with no problems and has no more vomiting or diarrhea, you may be able to watch him for longer. But, any sign that he is getting worse would be a definite indication to have him seen tonight. I always get concerned with puppies show these signs. They don't seem to be a resilient as adult dogs. Hope this helps.
