Question

I recently replace the house batteries on my Motorhome. When the motorhome is not running, i am not able to bring the house batteries online(using the on/off relay switch. I can start the diesel engine and then I am able to bring them online. I can start the generator and everything seems normal until I turn the engine off. After about 30 seconds, the generator quits on it's own and once again the house batteries go ofline and I am not able to bring them back online. Sure enough, if I crank the main engine again, I am able to bring the house batteries online as well as run the generator. What is the problem?

Hi There!!!

Thanks for Choosing Just Answer....

Did you have this issue prior to replacing the batteries? IS this a frieghtliner chassis?

Thanks, Robert

I did have the problem with the generator. It would not want to start unless I had the engine running. It would then start and after I shut the engine down, the generator would quit about 30 seconds later. I don't recall having the problem getting the house batteries to come online, even when it was obvious that they needed replacing.

Answer

OK

The generator sounds like it is a separate issue maybe shutting down on a fault. I would verify your hook ups for the battery cables, looks like allot of wires back in that area. Normally you will have a dis-connect solenoid and you should be able to hear it clicking when you hit the switch. IF you do have one you can jumper across the solenoid to see if that is the problem. HERE is a print that will help you trace the system and verify your battery hook up. A 12 volt test light will help in seeing where the power is and where it is missing. hope this helps...

I failed to mention that it is a Freightliner Chassis. A 2004 Fleetwood Providence. I can hear the solenoid click when the engine is running, but when it is not running, it is as if everything is dead.

Sounds like to me that something might be crossed. You should be able to hear that clicking normally with the engine off, that tells me that power is not making it to that point. That print I sent is for your coach(frieghtliner) the reason I asked is to make sure you did not have a spartan chassis..... Also you might want to check you inverter. Make sure no breakers are tripped, if you are not getting AC voltage also that would be another area to look, might want to reset the power on them...
