There are three possible causes for this that make sense.

1. A bad sensor. There are a group of sensors in this printer that indicate when there is paper in the feeder or tray. If one of these sensors have failed it is a hardware fix, and you have to take the printer in for repair.

2. Roller pressure. The rollers that feed or 'grab' the paper from the tray can spin too freely due to wear or pressure. If this happens a false reading can be given that the paper tray is empty.

3. The paper tray is not seated properly or is broken. If the paper tray is not all the way in the printer of critical pieces are broken, the printer will read the tray as empty or not present.

If the problem is the rollers, they can be replaced or tightened. This can typically be discovered just by examining them.

If the issue is the tray, you can get a replacement and try it.

If the issue is the sensors, you will need to take it in for repair.
