Question

My 16 year old son drove his father's company's tractor trailer about a month ago and hit an electric pole. He had a learner's permit at the time. He received tickets, which he paid, and his license is suspended. Charges could have been pressed against my son by his father, by the township we live in I think, and by the company who owned the truck but all decided not to. My husband has since been fired by the company. My question: Can the company still press any charges against my son, or has time run out on that?

State/Country relating to Question: New Jersey

Accepted Answer

They can still press charges for at least a year, sometimes up to 2 years depending on the charge.

For Civil lawsuits, they can sue him for damage to property, they can sue him for up to 6 years.

But, the good news is that most likely, the police will not charge him at this point. They would have to sue him (actually they would sue you as his parents), which they probably will not do.
