Answer

On each coil there are 3 wires. 1 wire should have power, 1 wire should have ground, and the computer pulsates ground off and on to actiave the coil. So you will need to see which wire is having problem then test that same wire at the computer to see if its working if not the computer is the problem if so you will need to fix/replace the wire. Let me know if you have questions, here is a diagram and I circiled the wire in red that is likely giving you problems. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

got power on all three one with a brigth light one with less light and the last one with a poor light how much voltage should i be getting?

Accepted Answer

There is a black wire that goes to each coil and they should both have a good ground. Check the black wire on both coils they should both have a good ground and let me know what you find. Each coil also has a tan/black wire going to it and it should have battery voltage. The white wire going to the working coil has the same function as the orange wire on the non working coil. Compare the differences in how each wire works from what I can see and how almost all coil systems work the orange wire should pulsate ground off/on. So if you have voltage on the orange and black wires on the non working coil there is likely a short to power. Let me know if you have questions and what you find different between the two coils. Thanks.

hi dan, this is XXXXXX with the sonata sorry for the delay to get back to you I did my reading of voltage as you say and i get the same readings on the black wires going to the coils also same on the tan-black wires but a difference on the orange and white with the meter on 20v on the non working coil i get 0.08 and 0.02 on the working coil this with the ignition on.

I dont think that small of a difference would matter but it could. Check to see if the same voltage reading is at the orange wire directly at the ECM voltage changes to the same as the working coil then replace the wire. I would also use a LED testlight to see if the wire pulsates ground off/on to see if problem is the pcm or wiring or you can do a resistance test between the coil and ecm on that wire and compare the resistance on the good coil if resistance is high replace wire if resistance is the same replac ECM. Let me know if you have questions, thanks.

try what you just told me and the comes on and then go of on both coils ,try to started and it did not but both coils get hot .

Ok, swap the coils just to make sure that the problem stays on that one side then the next step is to do a resistance test between the coil and ecm. You can also do a voltage drop on both of the coils between the negative and battery negative and power and battery power while trying to start vehicle and this will show the difference in power, it should be small. Compare it to the differences on the coil with the properly working circuit. If everything is the same other then the orange wire then you will need to do a resistance problem to verify it is not a wiring problem if not replace the ecm. Let me know if you have questions, thanks.
