Question

I have a palomino cabover camper with a Hydroflame HF8012 furnace. Last outing the fan/motor began making a hi pitch squeal(Motor bearing?) Sometimes when I slammed one of the utensil drawers next to it, the squeal would stop. Just pulled the unit from the camper to bench test. Have 3 wires, red, black and white, but could not get the motor to run when hooked up to 12 volt battery. Question- how do I connect these three wires to a 12v battery to get the motor to run on the bench, and if the motor is bad, how do I pull the ouside fan off without chingering the fan blades- puller or does it unscrew and if it unscrews, clockwise or counter clockwise? Looks like once that outside fan is off, the motor and inner squirrel cage just slides out the other side.

Answer

Hi: Thanks for coming to Just Answer with your question. My name is Randall and I believe I can assist you with this. The motor is squealing because the bearings are going out. They are just a bronze bushing. You need to get a new motor. Be sure and take the model number and serial number with you. The fan blades use a set screw that is an allen-type. Loosen it slightly and put some WD 40 on it and let it set for a few minutes. It should slide right off. Be careful not to bend the blades. Some of these use a clip that can be taken off with neddlenose pliers. It varies with the year. Geat back to me if you need more info. The wires on the motor should be red and black. Red is positive. All the best, R.J.

Thanks for the help- i see the setscrew now. When I hook the red and black to a 12 volt source, is there any delay, or should the motor start right up?

Answer

It would start right up if the brushes are good and the bearings aren't seized up. What year is your camper? Let me kow if you need a source for the motor. All the best, R.J.

Found a motor locally-the camper is a 1987 or 1988, furnace is a hydroflame HF 8012P. Just hooked it up to the 12v source, using the black and red wires, motor does NOt kick on

Answer

Is this a 3 lead motor? If so, the white is neutral and the red would be one speed and black the other. If the brushes are bad or the bearings seized, it won't come on. This is a model that has been out of production for a long time. Did the new motor have any paperwork with it or not or have you picked it up yet? R.J.

have not picked it up yet. Will compare when I do so. Just pulled the motor, only two leads, black and red. Hooked it directly to a 12 v source and it runs fine. I think the reason it may not come in when in the assembly has to do with the thermostat hookup or the relay. I know there is a delay when I first turn it on and push the thermostat up on initial start. The fan/blower takes 30-45 seconds to kick on. May be just the relay.

When I hooked up just the motor, runs fine, no squeal- any other ideas where the squeal comes from?

Accepted Answer

That may keep it from not running, but has no effect on the squealing. I have had some success in taking apart a motor and polishing the shaft and relubricating the bearings. That is only if the brushes are at least half there. Yes, the white wire has to do with the timed delay relay. That controls the motor coming on. I kind of thought that the case, but thre are a few dual speed motors. The squealing is from the bearings unless the fan blades were rubbing on something. Were any loose? You might try lubricating the bearings and putting it back in with the fan blades and see if it works o.k. Most times it won't, but there are a few exceptions!
