Hi,
First, I need to confirm the BSOD number. It seems to be a 0x00000074. Please press the pause key as soon as you see the blue screen to try to freeze the screen until you can tell me the number.
However, the BCCode 116 seems to point to 0x00000074.
This is the description for 0x00000074
The BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO bug check occurs if the SYSTEM hive is corrupt. However, this corruption is unlikely, because the boot loader, known as NT Loader (NTLDR) in versions of Windows prior to Vista, checks a hive for corruption when it loads the hive.
This bug check can also occur if some critical registry keys and values are missing. Thee keys and values might be missing if a user manually edited the registry.
You can try to resolve it....but there is a chance you might need to reinstall.
Try restarting the computer by selecting "last known good configuration" in the boot options.
If the restart does not fix the problem, the registry damage is too extensive. You must reinstall the OS or use the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) that you previously created by using the Windows Backup tool (if you did).
Sorry for the news....but you'll hear nothing but the truth from me.
Dear QCIHDTM,
If you think reinstalling will fix the problem, that's what I would like to try.
How do I do this?
Do I insert the Windows 7 Upgrade DVD back into the drive?
IF so, will it proceed to reinstall, or will it reject it because it recognizes that Vista 7 is already installed and so technically it's no longer an upgrade?
Now, to complete my information (I hit the button by mistake...)
if it is a 0x00000116 then it is related to the Video Driver.
I would suggest that you try safe mode after trying last known good configuration.
Based on the fact that some manufacturers were not 100% ready for win 7 this is a possible scenario.
In order to "try" to fix it definitively, you should update your driver for your video card to the latest version available (either for win7 or vista if no win7 driver available).
What I think you need to do is to first try last known good configuration and then safe mode before deciding to reinstall.
But, more than anything....try to get the error code from teh blue screen...if you can not pause it because it goes too fast for you....concentrate on looking on the top left of the screen....the first line of long numbers will end either with 116 or 74...please AT LEAST tell me that! :)
reinstalling is an option if you cannot fix.....it's always an option...a very expensive one in time and efforts if you have data to recover.
Sorry for the delay in replying. My operating system just went down again. It did NOT pause when I hit the pause button, but I did reread that number you asked about and it seemed correct. While booting up, I asked my daughter about Video Drivers and she told me where to find that information.
So, are you suggesting that I update the Video Driver now, rather than reinstall (because reinstalling would not fix the problem)?
Or, do you want me to wait until it crashes again and try to copy the first long line of numbers?
I would be ideal that you can tell me the numbers.
You said that they seem correct...which ones? 74 or 116?
If you bought upgrade, you will have to first reinstall Vista and then upgrade to win7.
Along with the fact that you will need to save all personal information that you may want to save (e-mails, doc, pictures, songs, etc) in a medium that will not be affected by the reinstallation (external hard drive for instance?)
It is a lot of work and also, if the driver that you use (provided that the driver is the issue) is the same...the problem will likely reappear.
Have you tried to boot in last known good configuration?
What about sabfe mode?
It was my understanding that the system did not boot at all, was I wrong? Are you able to logo on?
If so...I can tell you both how to find out what error was and where to download the latest drivers from
The system boots every time I try it. BUT then, after running 10, 20, 30 minutes or more, the computer shuts itself down, and the SAME error message pops in the notification window.
So, yes, (a) Tell me how to find what the (repeating) error is and
(b) Tell me where to download the latest drivers.
Thanks.
ok,
first things first
Click on the Windows button and on the white bar eventvwr.msc then hit enter.
accept any confirmation that pops up
on the event viewer, on the left side, double click on Windows logs, then click on System
On the center top you will be presented with a list of incidents. Please start scrolling down until you find any 6xxx (6 thousand anything) entries (look at the Event ID column)
on every 6xxx entry (do it with the 8 first entries that you find), please click on it and copy the contents in a notepad and then copy all of them together on your next post.
The log reads as follows, copied until two of the unexpected shutdowns show up.
PS. In answer to a previous question, yes BC Code 116, and the number 0x00(lots of zeros)0116.
Event ID 6013 The system uptime is 31 seconds.
Event ID 6005The Event log service was started.
Event ID 6009Microsoft (R) Windows (R) 6.01. 7600 Multiprocessor Free.
Event ID 6006The Event log service was stopped.
Event ID 6013The system uptime is 25 seconds.
Event ID 6008The previous system shutdown at 11:35:46 AM on 10/28/2009 was unexpected.
Event ID 6013The system uptime is 23 seconds.
Event ID 6008The previous system shutdown at 9:28:16 AM on 10/28/2009 was unexpected.
ok...since you have acces to your system I can ask you for a file to upload to a place where I can get it.
The fact that is a 116 tells me that it is a driver issue.
In order to figure out the driver, the best is if I can look into the dump (the file you will upload).
Please go to w ww.rapidshare.com
You will have a space to type with a Browse button on the right. Please click the right button and navigate to :
C:\Windows\Minidump\
there will be several files there with a name similar to 102709-22573-01.dmp
you can ulpload any of those files and share the link with me so I can download it.
in order to upload, once you have selected the file, click on Upload (big blue button)
Once it finishes, please copy the link that it provides to you in your next post
thanks
Problem:
I followed your instructions, browsed to the 102709-xxx.dump file, then tried to open it to share it with you. But! The computer refused, saying I didn't have permission. I'm the sole owner, operator, etc. of this computer. What does it mean I don't have permission?
I called my computer-savvy daughter, and she said to disable McAfee, that perhaps it was blocking. I disabled McAfee and the computer still refused to open and share this file. What now?
try the following
instead of opening Internet Explorer the usual way.....click on the windows button, tehn locate Internet Explorer RIGHT CLICK on it and select Run as Administrator.
Tehn go to the rapidshare and repeat the process.
If it does not work, I'll need to ask you to do a couple more things.
Okay, here's the link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/299237507/102609-21652-01.dmp.html
ok
Let's try a couple things.
#1 your card is an nVidia but I cannot figure out the model
so first we are gonna let nVidia site try to find it for us. If it does not work, I'll tell you how to get it manually.
ht tp://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
click on that link
Option 2 is to automatically detect, click on Graphics Drivers
Internet explorer will pop up a little stripe below the address bar please click on it and select to install / allow.
Allow the installation of the activeX from nVidia. If the app does not return the driver you need to download we will have to find the version and download it manually.
ok...
click on the windows button
type devmgmt.msc hit enter
on the device manager double click "display adapters"
what's the model of the display adapter ?
Yep,
it's NVIDIA GeForce 9100
ok, this is the latest driver from Nvidia:
http ://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_191.07_whql.html
please download and install.
Now, the driver does not list your model....it starts with models newer. However, I am confident that it is backwards compatible.
If you receive a message that for some reason you cannot install it, please let me know.
