Question

Hello, I play a lot of tennis, but the last two month I feel a lot of "cracking" in my shoulders and neck area when I move my arm. No pain, just uncomfortable, because of the weird feeling and it is a lot of cracking. Why is that? What can I do to make it go away?

Answer

Hello,

This crackling is most probably from changes of Osteo-Arthritis in your neck and Shoulders.

This would cause formation of Bone Spurs and other joint changes that would cause this crackling and would increase on movement.

I would advise you to see a doctor, preferably an Orthopedist for an X ray of your Neck and Shoulders to confirm this.

Regular and appropriate exercise would help prevent further degeneration that can cause a nerve compression ( radiculopathy ).

Kind Regards,

Dr.Joshi

I have alredy seen a doctor and there was nothing in the x-ray. I feel like it is more in my muscels / tendons. Like if I touch the top of my shoulder and sqeeze the tendons that run on top of my shoulders to my arm, they hurt a little too. Could it also be the cartlidge in between muscels/bones? What could I take to keep my cartlidge good? I am already taking a multivatim and calcium.

Hello,

Yes, this can be cartilage wear and tear and thus not picked on the X ray.

You can take Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate supplements, that can help with cartilage wear.

Kind Regards,

Dr.Joshi
