Question

During the night I will sometimes awaken with a sharp pain in my leg just above my knee. It will feel like I am being pinched or stuck with a sharp object. After a while the pain will go away but there will be a bruise in that area the next morning. Last night the pain was more diffuse extending up the inner side of the leg. I used a hot pack on it so that I could get some sleep. Is this Phlebitis?

Answer

Hello,

One of the complications associated with varicose veins include phlebitis .
A form of phlebitis that sometimes affects varicose veins is superficial thrombophlebitis .
.Superficial thrombophlebitis is inflammation of a vein due to a blood clot in a vein located just below the skin's surface .
Your symptoms can be related to superficial thrombophlebitis .
Your doctor may advise a colour doppler study of lower limb for further management .

I have had a doppler study done on that leg with negative results. Is my only option a hot pack in the middle of the night? What can I do to prevent this problem?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, varicose veins may cause complications, such as mild to moderate pain .
Since the pain is present only in left leg the pain may be related to varicose veins as well .
Your doctor may recommend compression stockings .
Your regular doctor may refer you to a vascular surgeon for further evaluation and management as well .
