Question

My 20 lb 7 year old West Highland Terrier just ate my 7 year old daughter's Cingulair pill that fell on the floor. My daughter takes one pill per day for Asthma maintenance. Should I be concerned for the dog, and if so, what should I do?

Answer

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that this occured. Montelukast (Singulair) is generally safe for use in pets. That said, note the dosage as overdose can occur. The typical10mg dose does not tend to cause problems. It would be advisable to call your vet and let them know this, however, as they know your pets complete medical history and any pre-existing conditions that may be affected by this. If this just occured, vomiting can be induced to expel it.

It was a 5mg chewable, so it sounds like she will be fine.

Hi,

These are generally not problematic, just consider giving your vet a call to be safe as they know your pets background in full. You can read on the use of this drug in pets (and symptoms of overdose should this ever occur again) here: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1303+1469&aid=3274 I hope this helps you.
