Does the medication Zydis cause weight gain? When Searching the web I found tht most people lose about 14 lbs. Is this correct? I am manic Depressive Bi Polar and I do not want to take any medication that will make me gain weight. My Dr. suggested Zyprexa but my son gained a lot of weight when he took it for the samr e problem/ What medicine does not make you gain weight

Hi and thank you for your question. Zydis is a process used to make tablets that orally disintergrate, it is not a medication, but rather a term to describe the way the medication disolves. Zypreza a trade name for Olanzapine, other trade names for this same drug are Zyprexa Zydis, Zalasta, Zolafren, Olzapin, Rexapin. One of the side effects of this med is weight gain. Can you tell me if there are any medications for Manic DepressiveBi Polar that do not cause weight gain?

Yes, there is a category of antidepressants that seek to balance the brain's naturally-occurring chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine. These drugs are not likely to cause weight. Medications in this category include nefazodone, venlafaxine and duloxetine. A medication that also works with the brain chemical dopamine is bupropion. Bupropion is unlikely to cause weight gain, and in fact, may cause some weight loss. It is also used to help people quit smoking.
