Question

I have made a big mistake. I feel that I have insulted my son and his wife's parenting skills. I have apologized and they are not responding. What should I do next? ( Brief background: My son and his wife decided not to attend a family Halloween gathering because they did not want their girls ages 3 and 10 months to get sick or to infect anyone at the gathering. I told them they were being ridiculous and I was very disappointed because a few hours before their decision not to come he told me his girls were healthy and that they were coming.They do not attend many family gatherings on our side of the family. Family has always been a big priority for me and my son was raised that way. )

You've done the right thing, and now you have to wait. Mistakes like yours get made everyday, and are forgivable. I would give it a little time and then send a sorry card in the mail. Try to insert some humor into it in a couple days.

You might want to tell them a memory of when something like this happened to you and how you felt about it - this would show that you're truly emphasizing with them. Parenting with a newborn at home is hard and no one is in their right minds all the time - they could be reacting to stresses and just blew at you. If you're religious, pray for them and their happiness, and direction for you to repair the wound.

Good luck, and you're very humble to catch this so quickly.
