Question

My 17 yr old daughter has Hydrocephalus/VP Shunt. She is hearing a swooshing sound in her head when she lies down at night. She has been dizzy, blurred vision (once) stiff neck, vomitting, emotional, headache, drainage casuing bad breath. Shunt Series came back no change from last year, Eye Doc said Optic Nerve looks fine, CRP work-up no infections. Heading to the ENT today for hearing test etc. possibly looking for Pulsatile Tinnitus/ICP ~ I feel as though we need a very specialized Doc who can read into Margie's symptoms` this has been going on for 1.5 weeks and I want to spend her time at the right specialist. Any ideas for me? Thank you. Ann

Hi and thank you for your question. I am sorry your daughter is experiencing these problems. Pulsatile tinnitus is a very good possibility for the swooshing sound she is hearing when in bed at night, which is caused by the sound of blood flowing through vessels. There can be a few different causes including:

Arterial Sounds

Venous Sounds

Tumors

Spasm of Middle Ear

To Diagnose the cause imaging of the vascular system of the head and neck are needed. The ENT is a good place to start, and if the problem remains undiagnosed her Neurologist should be consulted. I hope this information helps you,if so, please click accept. I wish your daughter the best:-)
