Question

After using depo-provera for birth control for 6 years, last summer I stopped taking the shot. Still, my period is irregular, coming only every six weeks or so. When it does, I have terrible cramping, diarrhea, and flu like symptoms (I'm cold/I'm hot, etc). Yesterday, the pain from my cramping was so intense that I passed out. My mother who is a nurse says maybe I "vagaled out." I have a doctors appointment today, but I want to know what tests to ask for. I'm 25, healthy weight and diet. In August I had general blood work to test for thyroid, etc and everything was normal. Would hormone testing be appropriate or is there something that could prevent these dramatic symptoms when I start my period?

Hello,
You are experiencing very common symptoms from the use of long term depo provera. You really do not need hormone testing - however I would ask to get a TSH (Thyroid stimulating hormone) and a prolactin level as well as a blood count and an estrogen level (called estradiol). Also, to help get your periods back on tract and to get the inside of your uterus back to normal - I would suggest using a birth control pill for about 6 months - this will help re-develop the uterine lining that the depo provera wiped out. Do NOT use a Tri version of the pill (so do not use ortho Tri Cyclen, ortho novum 7/7/7/) - use something like Alesse, ortho cyclen, lo ovral, etc.
