Question

Our rescued kitty was given a "mega dose" of deworming medication 1 week before our adoption. She is still having diarrhea and now some vomitting but is otherwise frisky and very loving. Should we be worried? The rescue group told us to expect diarrhea but for how long?

Hello there,

How old is the cat?

Has your vet checked a stool sample since the cat was wormed?

How long ago was the cat wormed?

25 days and 15 hours ago.

Reply

The cat is 5 months old. I do not know if a vet has checked her stools. We rescued?adopted her a 5 days after the treatment. The treatment was 10 days ago.

Accepted Answer

The cat should not still be having diarrhea from the wormer. It passes through the system within 24 hours. A stool sample needs to be checked by your vet. The cat may have coccidia, which is a single celled parasite wormers do not kill. You should not see vomiting at this point either. If the stool is clean, the cat will need oral meds from your vet to treat the diarrhea and possibly a special diet until the gut has time to heal.
