Question

I have 2 male cats. The older one is 9 and the younger one is 3. I got the younger one as a kittten for the older one to play with, but realized after I did that that the older one would prefer to be an only cat. I kept the younger one and they now have learned to live together. The younger one is still very playful and active, and I would like to add another cat to my household. Since I already have 2 males, should I get another male or a female?

Answer

Hello there,

Males cats make better pets than females in general. I would stick with another male.

I was actually hoping for a more thorough answer as to how the cats would react to the different/same sex of feline, and how a new feline of same/different sex would react to the established pets. Something more than just an opinion. Current pets are fixed and the new feline would enter the house fixed as well.

Accepted Answer

There is no way to know how any of the cats will react when introduced. They may get along right away or they may hiss and growl. Female cats are very territorial and independent by nature. Adding a female will have a much higher chance for behavioral problems developing. Male cats are typically more laid back and adapt better to change. There are exceptions for each sex ofcourse. If you want to go with the best odds of successfully bringing in another cat, get a male.
