Question

My dog labrador 30 kilos is suffering of an advanced cancer and I am giving her Moderin (cortisone 8 mg in the morning). Some hours after taking cortisone, she eats and seems happy. Otherwise she doesn't want to eat and it is difficult to convince her to take the pills in the morning. I was wondering to give 1 pill (4 mg) in the morning and 1 pill in the evening or 8 mg in the morning and 4 mg in the evening in order to make her to eat something in the morning. Is it too much 12 mg in a 30 kilos dog? Many thanks for your answer. Kind regards Ana

My labrador has a lung cancer and perhaps in other parts of her body. I am giving her only cortisone (8 mg) and some vitamines. Her weight is 30 kilos and until now, she doesn't lost weight. It is very difficult to convince her to eat the pills in the morning, because she doesn't want to eat at all. When she takes the pills she eats and seems happy. In order to avoid this difficulties in the morning

DearAna,

I am so sorry your girl is so ill.

Ask your vet for a Fentanyl patch so she will always have the benefit of pain meds:

I dont see any reason why you cannot give 4mg in the am and 4 in the pm if it helps her to eat.

Try human baby food as that is much more digetable than dog food. Also chicken, beef, liver, fish, cheese, eggs etc.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your girl's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

Please let me know how she is doing. I will always be here for you.

Sincerest best wishes and prayers for her,

Terri

Dear Terri

Many thanks for your answer. Could you please let me know if Tosca is very ill I can increase the Methylprednisolonum (Moderin) from 8 mg to 12 mg. She didn't have until now any adverse effects of cortisone. Her weight is 30 kilos.

Concerning fentanyl patches, as she has lung cancer and one of the bad effets of the patches is respiratory depression, do you think that there will be a risk for her? She breaths very fast but her tongue is rose and seems OK. She still likes to go to the park.

Many thanks

Very kind regards

Ana

Answer

Dear Ana,

I am so sorry Tosca is so ill.

Due to her sdvanced illness you must talk to the treating vet about the possiblity of Fetanyl helping or hurting. And also if the cortesone can be safely increased.

How about just spliting the dose to 4 and 4? Then she will get some in the am and may be motivated to eat and the other half at night.

I understand this is a struggle for both of you and if I can help in any way at all I will always be here for you.

Try the tasty foods to get her eating. Please let me know what happens.

Best wishes and prayers for her,

Terri
