Question

Calorie Intake - I am on p90X www.p90x.com, hiking for 30 minutes for 5 days a week. Playing tennis 3 days a week. I weigh 197-200 pounds now after 30 days on this plan - I weighed 215 when I started. But have been hovering around 200 for about 10 days I worried that my calorie intake is low... I am typically consuming about 1200-1300 calories a day. Virtually no bad carbs or bad sugars.. nothing too fatty.. Breakfast - Protein Shake (250 calories) Lunch - Chicken Salad or Sandwhich (300 calories) Dinner - Lean Meat, Veggies (500 calories) Snack - Fruit,Random (150 calories) My original question was, how many calories should I consume to GET LEAN and continue to loose weight.. I posted this before and got a good answer from a great expert that said I should eat 1500-1800 so that i dont loose weight too fast due to fast re-gain - New Question - what i want to know is... how little calories can I eat without pushing my body into starvation mode?

Hello; Thanks for the picture. I needed your height to do some calculations regarding your caloric needs. A general rule is 1500-1800 calories per day for men to lose weight. However, some men, particularly those with an active exercise regimen, may actually need more calories to maintain their metabolism and meet the increased demands of the body, due to exercise. Based on your height, weight, age, and exercise regimen, you may actually need to increase your caloric intake to 2000-2400 calories per day. Increasing your calories may actually help you jump start your weight loss. Since you need to increase your calories, you should consider adding more snacks. Try to eat every 3 hours while awake. This actually helps to speed up metabolism. When you eat carbohydrates, try to add a protein. Also, try not to get in a rut, eating the same foods. The body is less likely to plateau when there is variety. Also, since you have some room to move, try mixing up your caloric intake. Perhaps 2400 one day, 2100 the next, and so on. At this point, with your workouts, you need roughly 2900 calories to maintain your weight now. Therefore, if you drop to 2400, this should promote healthy weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week. Healthy weight loss equally lasting weight loss. Therefore, get out of the starvation mode, keep working out, and you should see some weight drop off. I wish you all the best. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please let me know. Lisa

Thanks again for your response - but, there are all kinds of low calories diets that work for people looking to loose weight. Why do those work for so many people?? My parents went on some diet that is 500 calories a day and lost 25 pounds each and have kept it off!

How long should I test this high calorie intake?

Answer

Well, I think the previous answer is a bit different from that presented by my fabulous colleague. Both are similar; however, the previous posting, does provide you with a higher caloric intake. In your particular case, since you are working out, you likely need more than the traditional 1500-1800 calories. Now as for your body hitting a plateau, it's difficult to predict when or if that will happen. The best way is to implement measure that are less likely to suppress your metabolism. First of all, mix it up. Since you are a P90x person, similar to a Tony Horton phrase, metabolism confusion. Your body is a machine. When things are predictable, it's easier for your body to grow accustom to routine. Keep your diet full of variety. I recommend eating within a calorie range, rather than sticking with a set calorie number. Even if that range is only a difference of a couple hundred calories. Also, I recommend eating every three hours. Food is fuel. When you eat every three hours this is like fueling the fire (your metabolism) every three hours. As mentioned previously, mixing carbohydrates with a protein source offers some benefits. First of all, proteins are satisfying, so people tend to eat less carbohydrates. Also, combining carbohydrates with protein is said to improve the overall metabolism and utilization, so carbohydrates are less likely to be stored as fat. When I have patients or friends for that matter that have hit a plateau, I usually recommend eating higher calorie for a couple of days and then cutting back. This can help the metabolism rev up. Also, if you are hitting a plateau and not losing, you can try increasing your water intake. This can help. I hope this helps to answer your question. On a side note, I hope you really enjoy the P90x. I have enjoyed his videos since the beginning. Lisa I am going to edit this, I noticed you changed your response with a different question. I would recommend trying it for at least a week. As long as you work out, you won't gain weight. However, that reminds me---you are now building muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat. I would recommend taking your measurements too. Even if your scale number doesn't drop, you may see some inches lost. Lisa
