Question

Please help,my Guinea pig has been under vet care for 1 year now in which time he has gone from weighing 2lb 5 oz to now weighing 1lb 5 oz and is so thin i can feel every rib.my vet now suspects liver failure after eliminating most other causes of weight loss.He has had his teeth checked and has been treated for intestinal parasites. He is drinking a lot more now than usual and today i found his fur to be urine soaked so have bathed him and thoroughly dried him. I'm really worried,i'm afraid he may be facing his last days with me now.any advice i would be most greatful

P.s it may also be helpful to know that he is producing much smaller droppings than normal, drier harder and about half the size.He has also lost his 'voice' and cant make the usual guinea pig 'wheek' but it is very silent and wheezy sounding.

Hello,

I'm sorry to see that no one has responded to your question earlier. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online and saw your question. Do you still need help? If so, some additional information will be useful.

How old is your guinea pig?

What is his diet like - both the basics and any treats and supplements?

Does he have a good appetite?

Does he seem to be drinking more than usual?

Thank you.

Hi Anna,thanks for replying,

my guinea pig is 2 years and 9 months old,he is fed on burgess guinea pig pelletts...crude fibre 17%,protein 17%,oil 4%,ash 6%,calcium0.9%,phsphorus 0.50% and added vitamins A,D3,E,C.vitamin C is 800mg/kg.main ingredient is listed as grass.he has a constant supply of pellets and hay every day.2-3 times a week he has a good handful of fresh food, typically cabbage carrot tomatoe and cucumber.other fresh foods include parsley broccoli .He has a good appetite but continues to lose weight.at the moment he has a prebiotic probiotic added to his water which may be why he is drinking more as it states it is palatable but yes he is drinking more than usual, although this is a recent occurrance over the last week.

Thankyou

Carol

p.s it may also be helpful to you to know he is not bedded on wood shavings but on a product called mega zorb which is made from virgin wood pulp.

Thank you for getting back to me. Your guinea pig does sound like he's very ill at this point, with symptoms occurring in several different body systems.

Liver disease in guinea pigs usually occurs for one of three reasons. One of the most common is being bedded on cedar or pine-based beddings. I tried to research MegaZorb to find out what kind of wood pulp they use in the product, but that information doesn't seem to be available. You could probably tell by smelling a newly-opened bag of it. If it has any kind of 'oily' odor to it, it could be made from wood pulp of trees that give off aromatic oils.

The other two most common causes of liver disease are infection with either salmonella or Tyzzer's disease. After the guinea pig recovers from the initial disease, liver damage occurs. Many different toxins can also damage the liver, but you would probably know if your guinea pig had been exposed to them. Tumors, also less common, can also damage the liver.

Regardless of what happened, your vet could confirm liver disease with some blood work. S-adenosyl-L-methionine, often called SAM-E, has been used to delay the progress of liver disease in guinea pigs and other species. However, you would want to confirm the diagnosis and discuss this treatment with your vet. From your description of your guinea pig's condition, it may be too late for treatment to do any good.

Diabetes can also cause weight loss in an animal that is eating well. Guinea pigs with diabetes also drink a lot and urinate a lot. Diabetes can also be confirmed or ruled out by blood work. Treatment is diet and administering of electrolyte solution to prevent dehydration. whether your guinea pig has diabetes or not, giving him some elctrolytes would be good for him. since he's drinking well, you can just add them to his water bottle. If you live in the UK, you can buy Lectaid in pet stores. In the USA, you would use Pedialyte, which is made for human infants and is sold in disount stores and pharmacies.

Hard dry droppings are often found in animals who aren't getting enough fiber or aren't drinking enough water. Be sure your guinea pig always has hay available. As for the voice change, and the wheezing sounds, it seems the respiratory system may also be involved. For home treatment, about all you can do is provide electrolyte solution, feed plenty of nutritious food, and if you have a vaporizer, run it in the guinea pig's room.

If the vet you've been seeing isn't a guinea pig/rabbit specialist, you may want to see one who is. The following site has a worldwide directory of such vets - scroll down to see the various countries:

Thank you very much for your sound advice,i think i will get my vet to refer to a specialist for bloods as you have given me hope that perhaps something can be done,i am desperate to do the right thing by him.my vet has been able to feel the kidneys and they are a reduced size but he feels blood work would give a diagnosis but said that the treatment is very limited in guinea pigs but i have to try, otherwise its a case of letting him fade away!in the meantime i will try the electrolytes and research megazorb which is actually sold as horse bedding but is recommended on many guinea pig sites as a safe alternative to shavings.thankyou once again you have been most helpful.
